There is nothing more degrading to a human being than to bow down before an idol. And nothing more dishonoring to God. Whether it be a physical idol or a heart idol, it matters not. When such idolatry is widespread it weakens a nation, it tees it up for divine judgment. As the text says, such rebellion is the end result of failing to diligently pass down the faith.
